Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about what the numbers mean and what we do not model. All figures are indicative — see terms of use.
-
Can I use this for financial decisions?
No. WhereAmIRich.com is for inspiration and general curiosity only. Do not use it to decide on job offers, relocation, investments, or budgeting. The data is approximate and incomplete. Read our terms of use and consult qualified professionals for real decisions.
-
What does equivalent salary mean?
The monthly pay you would need in another city to afford a similar standard of living to your salary at home, adjusted using Numbeo cost-of-living indices (excluding rent). Amounts stay in your home currency.
-
What do Better than home, Similar, and Worse than home mean?
They describe purchasing power versus your selected home city: Better at ≥ 1.55×, Similar between 0.75× and 1.55×, Worse at ≤ 0.75×. Indicative, directional labels only — not financial advice.
-
Can I use any city as my home base?
Yes. Choose any city under Based in. The tool is global; currency symbols follow that city.
-
How is local average different from vs home?
Vs home is your COL-adjusted power relative to where you live now. Local average compares you to a typical gross salary in the destination (approximate FX). Both can disagree — for example worse than home but still above locals.
-
What data powers the comparisons?
Numbeo indices and bundled salary benchmarks. Details in methodology.
-
Is rent included?
No — we use Numbeo’s cost-of-living index excluding rent. Rent can dominate real budgets.
-
Are taxes or visa rules included?
No. Use gross monthly figures you already know; net pay and work rights vary too much to model here.
-
How do share links work?
Query parameters store your setup, e.g.
?salary=6200&city=new-york&dest=london,bangkok. -
How often is data updated?
We refresh indices and salary tables periodically in the static bundle — not a live API feed.
-
Can I add cities to my board?
Yes — use Add destination in the grid to search and add from the catalog.
-
Is WhereAmIRich.com free?
Yes. No account; runs entirely in your browser.
